The Switch 2 launched in an interesting time for the industry, with Nintendo’s latest handheld-hybrid arriving at a period of relative instability, owing to external economic factors as well as hardware-related shortages. Despite this, the Switch 2 has managed to continuously grow over its past year and a half on the market – with Nintendo now revealing that the console has eclipsed the OG Xbox’s lifetime sales.
As part of the company’s latest fiscal earnings report , Nintendo updated its public sales data on both the hardware and software front. As of the 30th of September, the Nintendo Switch 2 has officially sold a total of 26.35 million units (an increase of 2.67 million compared to the previous Quarter).
Not only does this mean that the Switch 2 has now hit its first major sales milestone of 25+ million, but the console has also officially surpassed the lifetime sales of Microsoft’s OG Xbox ( which ended its run with 24 million units sold ).
On the software side , Nintendo also saw a range of its past releases hit (or approach) new sales milestones, with Donkey Kong Bananza selling 5 million copies [5.05M]; Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream nearing 9 million [8.83M] and the evergreen Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – which recently got a Switch 2 update – hitting 72 million [80.46 million when including MK8 on WiiU].
In total, the Switch 2 is currently sitting at an average of just under 3 games per console. Though a far cry from the Switch 1’s ratio of 10 games per system , Nintendo’s latest is still in its relative infancy, and so it will be interesting to see where the console lands once it reaches its 2nd anniversary and beyond.
