While the PS5 Linux project appears to be moving ahead despite the original creator's departure, an enterprising group of developers has adapted that project and Bazzite to turn the PlayStation 5 into something approximating a Steam Machine. Being that it is built on the same foundations as the PS5 Linux loader, the same limitations apply, meaning that it will only work on jailbroken PlayStation 5 consoles running on firmware versions 3.00-13.60, and there are other compatibility limitations documented in the installation guide on GitHub.

The particular variant of Bazzite being used is Bazzite-deck, which was originally built as an alternative to SteamOS for other x86 gaming handhelds, like the Lenovo Legion Go and ASUS ROG Ally, so by default it boots into Steam Gaming Mode on the PS5. It also offers an optional desktop mode running a full installation of KDE Plasma, which would conceivably allow the PS5 to work as a desktop workstation, as well. Between the desktop mode and Bazzite's handheld gaming mode, consoles running this software mod would have access not only to Steam games but to other game libraries, like GOG and Epic Games.

Another benefit of running Bazzite on the PS5 is that it allows users to unlock an additional four compute units in the PS5's GPU that come disabled in firmware as a binning strategy. These extra CUs can be re-enabled by running a script provided on the aforementioned GitHub repository, but there is no guarantee that it will result in a stable experience. The developer claims that unlocking the entire 40-CU stack should work on most consoles, but there is an unknown number of consoles that will produce "green dots and other artifacts" after enabling the extra compute units.
